Chronic kidney disease is a chronic disease characterized by a progressive loss of kidney function over time. The kidneys play an important role in filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood, which is then excreted through urine. They also help regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance, and produce hormones important for red blood cell production and bone health.
